For those of you who don't know, I love the Sacramento Kings. They have sucked the past few years but they had a title-contending team in 2002. In that year, they were playing the Lakers in game 6 in the conference finals that year. Beating the Lakers with time winding down, Robert horry hit a 3 pointer with virtually no time left to seal the deal and to force a game 7, which the lakers eventually won at home en route to another NBA title.
That loss was hard to get over because the Kings have always been so horrible and THIS WAS THEIR CHANCE. Yeah right, only to be taken away from them by Robert Horry and the three freakin' amigos wearing zebra clothes. I got over their loss (almost like you Jazz fans that can't get over the fact that Stockton-Malone was not that great of duo...thanks Michael and Scotty) but my pain was resurfaced with a chilling revelation: the game was possibly fixed.
A story from ESPN describes the facts that sent a bolt of shock through my vitals.....
"For an NBA player, it was the kind of loss that can take years to get over. Now the Sacramento Kings are dealing with it all over again.
A foul discrepancy so lopsided they couldn't help but wonder if they were being cheated. And this week, six years later, accusations that, in fact, they were.
On the verge of playing for a championship they would have been favored to win, the Kings lost Game 6 of the Western Conference finals to the Los Angeles Lakers, 106-102. Los Angeles shot 27 free throws in the fourth quarter, scoring 16 of its final 18 points at the line, to even the series.
Former referee Tim Donaghy alleged in court papers filed this week that two referees, known as "company men," purposely ignored personal fouls and called "made-up fouls on Team 5 in order to give additional free throw opportunities for Team 6."
Such a sad, sad day
